“Not all those who wander are lost.” –J.R.R. Tolkien
If you are like me your initial reaction to this brief gem of a quote is a bit of resistance. Our logical mind is likley prone to attack the implied wisdom of these words and argue against the relaxed tone of this statement.
Our society usually equates wandering with being lost. Whether lost due to lack of direction, morals, vision or just plain sloth. The thinking mind…you know, the one that uses fear as its fuel…is loathe to rest. A vital component of the cycle of change and accomplishment is the ability to rest…and for me that includes wandering. This is where wonder is born and imagination dawns.
Fear creates a detour to busy…an avoidance of genius. And as I am sure you would agree…our world today can use extra measures of both genius and wonder.
Give yourself a gift today. Wander a bit. With intention, now that you are aware of the addiction of the thinking mind to fear.
Another of Peck’s quotes and a favorite of mine is….
“If we know exactly where we’re going, exactly how to get there, and exactly what we’ll see along the way, we won’t learn anything. ” ― M. Scott Peck
IN-JOY your wandering,
Perry
