As a pilot I have learned the value of redundant systems. Having a built in and automatic backup plan can literally save the day.
The intricate and wonderful systems of the body take this feature to a level that we as yet don’t fully appreciate. One of these marvels is the pathway of nitric oxide. The primary pathway is the lining of our blood vessels, the endothelium that is triggered by movement of the blood to produce nitric oxide to enhance blood flow. The second pathway involves our microscopic friends, specific kinds of bacteria, to help us extract the precursors of nitric oxide from the nitrogen-rich vegetables we eat.
Both of these pathways are easily interfered with by how and what we eat. And whether we exercise or not. Diabetes, heart disease, obesity and many other serious consequences can be the result of this interference. Your health is a direct result of what you eat…and what you do not eat. Heavily processed foods, foods that are nutritionally deficient due to efforts to prolong their shelf-life, foods that have been stripped of nutrients like nitrogen and beneficial fatty acids….all to look pretty on the shelf for a looooong time…..these foods when consumed in favor of good nutrition give us the result of poor health.
Good health via good nutrition is simple. But there are no shortcuts.
I was on a long walk yesterday (working on increasing my shear effect by getting my blood moving!) and I noticed a young man walking home after his visit to the corner convenience story. He had a blue-colored fluffy confection in one hand and a soft drink in the other…a bag balanced in one hand that looked to contain more sugary poison…I had to squelch the urge to cross the street and share with him some basic nutritional concepts. I try to live by the saying that if your help is not asked for, your answers are only irritating…so I resisted the urge to stick my nose in.
It is sad for me to see the results of nutritional ‘not-knowing’….we could call it ignorance, however that sounds a bit righteous and condescending. So the urge to “inform” is resisted and another life is damaged by poor food choices.
So I believe the answer is still to vote for good food and greater health. By what I choose to purchase, what I order at restaurants and bottom line…what I refuse to eat. If more of us will vote, the natural economic result will be less demand for what kills us slowly and greater health will be the result for our society.
I finished an incredible book this weekend….Gaining Ground, by Forrest Pritchard. The story of a young man who had a passion to restore the heath, vitality and economic stretch of his family farm. Against big odds, and popular convention, he made decisions that were ultimately healthy for the land, his family, himself and the thousands that he served. We need more of people like Forrest. Buy the book…you will be rewarded!
Our earth, our bodies…are very adaptable to mis-use. Redundancy and repair mechanisms abound if only we will give our ecology (internal and external) the basic building blocks for health. We each have a vote with each choice we make.
Let’s make good choices today!
IN-JOY your health!
